Information submitted to PayPal is encrypted using secure socket layer (SSL) technology.  The security of your communication with PayPal can be ascertained by verifying that the URL you are connected to starts with "https" rather than "http", such as https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr, and also that the lock icon is shown in your browser window. 

The security of the shopping cart can be verified by clicking the "View Cart" button in the left menu panel to bring up the shopping cart window, and performing the following steps:

     For the Internet Explorer browser: right click anywhere within the shopping cart window and select "Properties" to bring up the Properties window; click the "Certificates" button to view the certificate.

     For the Netscape browser: right click anywhere within the shopping cart window and select "View Page Info" to bring up the Page Info window;  click on the "Security" tab, then the "View" button to view the certificate.
